Did you really see ‘um?

Did you really see ‘um?

Allow me to introduce you to the Ceratopogonidae crew. I know, I know, I know…you may be asking “Cera who?” Hey there Peculiar Chix…happy Thursday! I was traveling yesterday, so just getting a chance to complete and upload this week’s post. Now that I’m settled…let’s go!

For those that reside in the southern region of the United States, you may know the 4,000+ species of flying insects known technically as the Ceratopogonidae family, but more commonly known as “No-See-Ums”. Crazy name right?

But they are just as the name indicates – tiny insects that remind you of the size of a gnat…

…EXCEPT their wrath is a whole

different ballgame!

No-see-ums are in fact tiny, microscopic bugs that pack quite a punch. Nearly invisible to the naked eye, these little buggers are at their peak during the May and June months. While the males may irritate, they don’t bite. But leave it to the chix, to take interest in consumption. LOL!

As it turns out, the tiny ladies need the blood to further their reproductive process. So they inject you and then withdraw blood needed to sustain themselves. While they get what they need to make it through reproduction, the resulting impact is nearly unbearable. The incredible itch that takes over your skin at the point of the biting marks is un-bee-leavable! Imagine poison ivy times 2! Believe you me, when you have an encounter with no-see-ums, it is an unforgettable one!

Much like actual “no see ums”…

…we have no see ums of our own that come into our lives. Pesky, minute issues, challenges and situations and even people that come into our lives, unexpected, inject us with a myriad of things and then withdraw what sustains our lives out of us. Then leaving a reminder of the invisible encounter for days, months and sometimes years to come.

Although the actual encounter may have been brief and forgettable, the irritation that persists after the experience can produce a mind-numbing, intensely focused and irritating reminder.

The thing about no-see-um experiences…

…is that they bite, inject, withdraw and then leave. What they leave behind, however, is a path of destruction – a seemingly uncontrollable itch, redness, and overall irritation that arrests your daily life.

I don’t now about you, but girrllluuuhhh have I had some no-see-um experiences in my life! I mean, those type of encounters that just come out of nowhere, bite your bee-hind and then leave a path of destruction to be cleaned up.

Have you ever had a no-see-um encounter of your own? In your career? Your family? Your love life? Your friendship arena? Allow me to share with you one such experience I had on the career front.

What had happened was…

I had accepted a position with a new company. The day that I gave my 2-week notice to my boss, a co-worker shared with me that she had received a call. She went on to tell me that an employee of the new company gave her a ring and divulged that I was coming to her current place of employment. Well, my manager was presenting counter offers, so my departure had not been shared with anyone else and was not finalized. Should this information have been divulged, it could have jeopardized my current bill payer and it gave me great pause about the new bill payer.

Yooo, THIS was a sho’nuff no-

see-um encounter!!

Talk about the injection of an irritant that packed a punch! In the end though, the individual was mature and kind enough to offer an apology, the new company increased their salary offer and all was well with the world. I truly believe it was the continual protection promised to us that produced that end result.

One of the things that I love about the bible is that God declares his promises to His children. For the no-see-um encounters that we experience, He offers His protection and covering.

Here are 3 physical

…and 3 corresponding biblical promises (found in another one of my fav scriptures in the book of Psalm, the 91st chapter/division) offered to rid and/or protect you from a no-see-um encounter:

Number 1:

RECOMMENDATION: Screen in and secure your home’s windows, patio, porch and/or pool area

INTENDED RESULT: Create a barrier to keep the irritants from reaching the home’s inhabitants

BIBLICAL PROMISE: “Yes, because God’s your refuge, the High God your very own home, Evil can’t get close to you, harm can’t get through the door.”

Number 2:

RECOMMENDATION: Cover your skin with pants and long-sleeved shirts

INTENDED RESULT: Protect your skin from being exposed to the potential vermints

BIBLICAL PROMISE: “That’s right—he rescues you from hidden traps, shields you from deadly hazards.
His huge outstretched arms protect you—under them you’re perfectly safe; his arms fend off all harm.”

Number 3:

RECOMMENDATION: Use an insect repellant

INTENDED RESULT: Acts as a shield to provide a layer of protection between the vermints and your vulnerable skin

BIBLICAL PROMISE: “Even though others succumb all around, drop like flies right and left, no harm will even graze you.
You’ll stand untouched, watch it all from a distance…”

He continues with additional promises…

“He ordered his angels
to guard you wherever you go.
If you stumble, they’ll catch you;
their job is to keep you from falling…

“If you’ll hold on to me for dear life,” says God,
“I’ll get you out of any trouble.
I’ll give you the best of care
if you’ll only get to know and trust me…”

For every no-see-um encounter you may experience, there is a promise attached to bring you through it!

Love ya girlie!

At this intersection of faith, fabulosity and fun, you’ll find a space where pecularity is celebrated. It took me many years, but I finally discovered that I am indeed peculiar…and that being peculiar is amazing! I’d love for you to travel along this journey with me and celebrate this amazing gift of life that we have been provided.
You are welcome here!

“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people…from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.” – 1 Peter 2:9
